Water Ice Climbing Community Newsletter - Fall 2007

Mountaineers Water Ice Climbing Community Newsletter - Fall 2007

    Greetings Everyone!

This is the official newsletter of the Water Ice Climbing subcommittee.  The committee’s goal is to encourage a vibrant and active community of water ice climbers within the club. Translated into layman terms; more partners and fun for everybody.  We’d like to invite all of you and your friends, to the mixer described below. This newsletter will be produced twice a year, a pre-season issue in the fall and a post-season issue in the spring.  To recieve this newsletter and occasional announcements and news via email just email me at jeffstrt@verizon.net and I'll add yu to the mailing list.

Water Ice Climbing Season Kickoff Mixer - Wed Nov 7th 7pm @ clubhouse

Are you interested in water ice climbing? Or maybe you're just curious and want to find out more. All are welcome. Come mix with other like minded people, make some friends, find some climbing partners, and get in on the planning process for our first outings of the season.  We'll chat and sip the provided liquid refreshments for awhile and then watch the presentation “Early Season Ice in Hyalite and Banffhosted by Tom Lewis.  Come get the low down on these two excellent places where the ice climbing starts early.  Sign-up not required.

Questions? Contact the event leader, Jeff Street at jeffstrt@verizon.net

Visit Mountaineers Water Ice Courses for more information.

Water Ice Course not available for Winter 2007/2008 Season

The full Water Ice Course that Mike Maude has been running will not be available this season (Winter 2007/2008). Mike is stepping down and we haven’t found anyone to lead the course yet.  We are hoping to find someone to run it for next season.  So where does this leave current Water Ice course students? Hopefully the full water ice course will be available next year and you can pickup where you left off.  We won’t have strict time limits on completing the course. Or if you’ve done significant ice climbing on your own you might qualify for the graduation equivalency program (discussed below).

Water Ice Course Graduation Equivalency Program

For all of you that started the Water Ice course but haven’t graduated, we are offering a special graduation equivalency program.  If you have continued ice climbing outside the course and have effectively met the objective of the course (EG; Graduates of the course will be able to swing leads on moderate (WI-3) multi-pitch ice climbs”, we will proudly grant you graduation status and certificate (and would love to share some great ice climbing with you this season).  To apply for graduation send an email to jeffstrt@verizon.net with a summary of the course items that you’ve completed and you’re outside experiences (references preferred).

The Water Ice Subcommittee Needs Your Help

We really need your help to improve our programs. If you have any suggestions, comments, or feedback please feel free to contact me at jeffstrt@verizon.net.  We are also looking for volunteers to help with our programs.

Committee Members: Jeff Street, Phil Kelley, Anne Meegan, Joe Binder

I’m looking forward to meeting all of you at the mixer and sharing some great ice climbing this coming season.

    Sincerely,

    Jeff Street
