- Climbing Since: 1992.
- Preferred Types of Climbing: moderate mixed routes, like Forbidden/W Ridge
- Mountaineers Service: Climbing Committee, 1993-present.
- Other
Outdoor Activities: Also lead snowshoe and scramble trips for the
Mountaineers. I like to sail and canoe too, and have been involved
with my daughter in the Meany Lodge ski program.
My
climbing style trends towards the relaxed club-climbs type trips with
modest numbers of climbers. I try to hit the less popular routes,
though some of my favorites have since been upgraded to
basic/intermediate routes. ah well, more incentive to seek out new
places. My trips don't have any particular pace - depends on the
group. I did an ultra-lightweight combined Bailey range-Olympus range
traverse over 5 days, with no tents/bags which was a wonderful
experience - since we only had 15lb packs, we moved fast, saw bears
every day except the day on the glaciers.
Fun trips (tm) i've done:
Most
of my trips have had an element of something besides pure climbing; my
trips to latin america (three trips to the Mexican volcanoes, three to
the Andes) have tried to combine culture with mountaineering. I guess
you could say i'm not a single-minded climber, though i've done my
share of classic routes: Baker/N ridge, Grand Teton/Exxum Direct,
Rainier/Mowich Face, Goode/NE buttress, Stuart/N ridge.
Best Bivvy Spots in the Cascades:
Stuart
just has to have the best collection of sites - there's a couple good
ones just under the summit in fact. The summit steam caves on Rainier
have to be a close second though, and if they had any kind of views at
all, i'd put them up there on the top.
Big
Climbing Plans:
waiting for my daughter to grow tall enough so she can
drag me up some fun stuff that I'm not good enough to lead. Actually,
in the near term, i'm looking to do more alpine routes in BC. A week
trip in Strathcona on Vancouver Island during Jul/Aug this year is one
thing i'm looking for interest in. This spring, i'm going to make a
second attempt on Mt Mystery - we'll see if we can get further than
just the view of the peak we had a couple of years ago.
