Creating a Climb Leader Profile
Are you a Mountaineers climb leader who would like to have your profile listed on this web site? Here's how.
A good way to start is to select a picture of yourself. The picture need not be climbing-related. The best picture will be a well-lit relatively close up portrait where you are not wearing dark glasses so that people who see your profile can later recognize you in person.
Once you have chosen a picture you will need to prepare it for publishing on the web. It is important to resize image files so that the larger dimension is not greater than 480 (or 640 at most) before uploading them. Otherwise the images will tend to dominate the web page and download times may be painful for those with slower connections. A good way to publish your photo is to use the Gallery feature of the Mountaineers Forums message board but publishing anywhere is fine.
If you do not know how to publish your photo or you are having difficulties with getting your picture ready, you can send a mail message to mail@mountaineersforums.org with the image file as an attachment and we will take care of getting it resized and published on the web. Also, if your picture needs to be cropped, please let us know.
The next step is to prepare the text part of the profile. Here are some suggestions on information you might include:
- Climbing Since (year)
- Preferred Types of Climbing (e.g,. rock, glacier, ice)
- Mountaineers Service (e.g., committee membership or instruction)
- Other Outdoor Activities
- Favorite Climbs
- Climbing Style/Leadership Philosophy
- Preferred Pace
- Major Climbing Achievements
- Personal Statement
- Email Address
- Personal Web Site
A Category:Value format like this works well:
Climbing Since: 2000
In creating your profile you may want to look at some of the profiles that have already been published to get some ideas. Some people like to start their profile with a simple introductory paragraph or personal statement.
If you choose to include your email address, you may want to obfuscate it slightly to reduce the likelihood that automated bots will harvest the address as a target for spam. The address can be written like this:
myname [at] emailprovider.com
Once you have your picture and your profile text ready, the final step is to request creation of your profile. Create an account on the Mountaineers Forums message board (if you have not already done so) and send a message to mail@mountaineersforums.org with the subject "Climb Leader Profile request". In your message please include your full name as well as your Mountaineers Forums userid. We will reply with a message containing a link that you can use to create and edit your profile using the same editing screen that is used to create a forum posting. You will need to be logged in to the Mountaineers Forums message board for the link to work.
This FAQ entry describes how to include a picture in a posting http://mountaineersforums.org/faq.aspx#include_photos. Publishing photos to the Photo Gallery should be fairly straightforward but we will be adding an FAQ on the topic real soon. If you are having difficulties with getting your profile published and would prefer to have us take care of it, please send a mail message to mail@mountaineersforums.org with your profile text and instructions on what you want it to look like.
